A letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

The article below is really detached from the reality on the ground. In Burma, two governments are running the country. For COVID-19, the civilian government is doing well in containing the virus without the military ‘s help. In fact, many people dislike when they found out that the army bought COBAS 6800 machine to test COVID-19 but didn’t use it for the civilians. They just announced that they do have the machine when the civilian government received the machine via donation.

Myanmar civilian government managed to quarantine more than 100,000 people and managed to test, trace and isolate. Although testing is limited, COVID infection rate in Myanmar is not too bad and mortality rate is low if you consider health spending per capita compare to Japan and other neighbouring countries.

The civilian government led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi managed to mobilise the volunteers to run these quarantine centres without the help of army.

I think your staffer who wrote this article is biased towards the military and his views are opposite of what most civilians see the military in Burma.

I hope you will ask your staffer to learn more about the view of local people. In my opinion, journalists should reflect the views of local people and should not detach from the reality. However, this article praising the army is a bit delusional and out of touch with Burmese people.

I hope you will look into it.
